Elon Musk, who simultaneously heads six innovative companies-Tesla, SpaceX, Starlink, X (formerly known as Twitter), Neuralink, and xAI-is not stopping there.

He recently announced that xAI has begun training its models on the world’s most powerful artificial intelligence cluster: the Memphis Supercluster, located in Memphis, Tennessee.

According to the publication WREG , this supercomputer will represent the largest capital investment by a new market company in the city’s history. However, despite its ambitious plans, xAI does not yet have an agreement with the local energy company Tennessee Valley Authority, which is necessary to provide the project with electricity with a capacity of more than 100 megawatts.

According to Musk, the cluster is equipped with 100,000 liquid-cooled Nvidia H100 GPUs. He noted that the system operates on a unique Remote Direct Memory Access (RDMA) structure, which allows data to be transferred efficiently and with low latency between processing nodes without loading the central processor.

The businessman said xAI plans to create “the most powerful artificial intelligence in all respects” by December 2024.

Musk added that the Memphis Supercluster will provide a significant advantage in achieving this goal. However, his reputation for meeting deadlines is not good. Previously, he has repeatedly postponed the launch of projects such as fully autonomous cars, robotaxis and missions to Mars. However, if xAI manages to unveil its new model on time, it will be a huge step forward for the company.

With giants like OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Microsoft, and Meta also working to create more powerful and affordable models, xAI must offer something truly new and useful to remain competitive in this race for customers and attention.

Interestingly, Microsoft, which supports OpenAI, is also said to be working on a $100 billion supercomputer for artificial intelligence training, codenamed Stargate. Depending on how these projects develop, the Memphis Supercluster’s status as the most powerful in the world may be short-lived.
